Your Unique Journey is Your Strength: Katie's Story About Embracing the Non-Standard Path in Interior Design

Whether you are a new designer or leading a seven-figure firm, it can feel daunting, especially when your path doesn't seem to align with the traditional routes often celebrated in the industry. But let me tell you something important: it's okay to forge your own path. In fact, it doesn't make you any less worthy or capable—in many ways, it makes you brave.

I started my own firm, Color Works, not through a conventional route, but out of my own frustrations. I struggled to find a colorist who truly understood my vision when I was fixing and flipping houses, so I decided to become the expert I needed. This decision led me down a unique journey, one that included going back to school to get my MBA and certification through the International Association of Color Consultants. My desire to understand the intricacies of running a business fueled my academic pursuits and shaped the way I approach my firm today.

How to Grow Your Design Business While Staying True to Your “Why” With Katie Decker-Erickson

Your Journey is Your Own

The world of interior design is as diverse as the spaces we create. There is no single "right" way to become a designer or to run a design firm. Some might follow a straight line from art school to apprenticeships, to established design firms, and eventually to launching their own practice. Others, like myself, may take a more winding road, filled with unexpected turns and personal discoveries.

Each journey is unique, including yours. The experiences and challenges you face along the way are what shape you into the designer you are meant to be. These experiences, no matter how unconventional, contribute to your unique perspective and approach to design.

The Power of Non-Traditional Paths

Choosing a non-standard path can feel isolating, especially when it seems like everyone around you has taken a more traditional route. But it's important to recognize the power and value in your unique journey:

  1. Innovative Perspectives: Coming from a different background or taking an unconventional path can provide you with fresh and innovative perspectives that traditional routes might not offer. Your diverse experiences become a rich source of creativity and problem-solving.

  2. Resilience and Adaptability: Non-standard paths often come with their fair share of challenges. Overcoming these obstacles builds resilience and adaptability—essential traits for any successful designer and business owner.

  3. Personal Growth: Each twist and turn in your journey contributes to your personal and professional growth. Embracing your unique path allows you to discover strengths and passions you might not have known you had.
